May is Healthy Vision Month! Even if you have never needed
eye glasses or contacts, you still need to include regular eye exams as a part of your health routine. Often, there are no
warning signs or symptoms during the early stages of eye diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. However, it is in the early stage of disease that treatments can most effectively prevent blindness.
To catch eye disease early, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you get a baseline eye examination by age 40, when early signs of disease or changes in vision may occur. However, if you have an eye disease or
condition that increases your risk for developing an eye disease (such as diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history
of eye disease), you should see an ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) even if you are younger than 40.
Upon examining your
eyes, your Eye M.D. can tell you how often you should have follow-up eye exams. As you age, it’s especially important
that you have your eyes checked regularly because your risk for eye disease increases. If you are age 65 or older, make sure you have your eyes checked every year or two for signs of age-related eye diseases.
Don’t let an eye disease sneak up on you. Schedule an exam today. Call 717-632-6063 for an appointment.
